Page 4 THE ROCKETEER Wednesday, December 7, 1966 Teens Comment on Student Lounge Some plans have been com pleted while others are still un derway for a Student Lounge! In fact, workmen have already begun to prepare the area desig nated for the lounge. As a result of the plans com pleted, everyone isn’t standing around anymore. Some students are playing pingpong, while others lounge around on benches that have been placed around the walls. The pingpong table is fast becoming the center of activities in the morning and after lunch. No coin-operated machines can be included in the future plans for the lounge area due to state rules; however, in the near future, students may be able to listen to a radio after finishing lunch. Plans for the lounge were made in hopes of cutting down on the hall traffic and noise during lunch periods. The lounge has not been in effect long enough to determine if it will fulfill these hopes. What do RHS students think of the lounge idea? Here are some of their opinions: Ginger Dunkley: “I think that the pingpong table should be farther from the door. I like the benches.” Jimmy Wade: “The student lounge is an excellent idea if it is carried out well. The benches and pingpong table are good ideas, but I don't think we have enough room or enough facilities for everyone to take part.” Carroll Rogers: “I think it’s a good idea because it gives the students something to do rather than sitting in the lunchroom. I think there should be another pingpong table. Even though a lot of people don’t get to play, they watch others play.” Tommy Rogers: “I think it’s a good idea, but there should be some system so all the students will be able to use it.” Maxie Wrenn: “I think they should add more recreational facilities such as more pingpong tables and dart boards. The pre sent facilities are not enough for everyone.” William Snipes: “I think it’s a wonderful idea, and it seems to keep students interested dur ing their free time. The benches have helped exceedingly well.” Most of the students polled seem to favor the lounge plans; yet, in an indirect way, they said that it would take the co- operation of each and every stu dent in order for the lounge to be a success. Survey Reveals Roxboro Interested In Discotheque By CLAUDIA GLASSCOCK “Will a teenage discotheque work in Roxboro?” The general public says “yes.” Recently, three Roxboro High School students, Rita Morrow, Diana Redford, and Betsy Bar rett, conducted a survey among some of the students and down town merchants of Roxboro, on their views toward a teenage discotheque. Rita reports that the students are in favor of this and feel that it would be a great thing for the Roxboro teenagers. They feel that it would boost their morale. These students have their own ideas of how the discotheque should be run. The survey shows a preference for a live band, in formal dress, no alcoholic bever ages, and an age limit of 15-21. Since a downtown location seemed most suitable, chaperons and a twelve o’clock curfew should be observed. Diana reports that the busi nessmen of Roxboro are in agree ment with the students. They agreed on location, hours, and dress, but felt that a policeman or church group should supervise the dances- They also related that the dances should be on a membership basis, in order to allow for expenditures. The students and business men all showed an interest in which they agreed to support this if such a thing was brought before the public. According to many of the per sons surveyed, should such a thing become a reality, it would be the “living end” to the teen- age problem in Roxboro of what to do for entertainment.
